“Making Safety a Way of Life”
Prevention Education is one of the Department’s Highest Priorities. Developing safety awareness and behaviors in high risk groups, primarily children and the elderly, is a constant challenge. Forming strategic alliances with industry and business is an ongoing process and historically, a successful one. The Public Safety Education Office oversees educational efforts with children, schools, preschools, teachers and daycare providers with a variety of educational offerings for business, residential, and targeted high-risk communities. Prioritizing safety messages and choosing appropriate delivery systems is an evolving challenge as we meet the needs of our city. Severe Weather and Smoke SimulatorOur severe weather and smoke simulation trailer has been a highly effective educational tool. Placing children in environments that feel and sound real teaches patterns of thinking and survival in the safety of non-emergency situations. Firefighters have observed the positive results of this training by the reactions of children involved in fires and emergencies across the city.
Topics Covered During the Sessions: Home Safety (all ages) Severe weather safety and survival skills Escaping fire engulfed homes and buildings Dynamics of heat and smoke
