All applications for permits are available at the Fire Marshall's office at 4119 Old Highway 31SW and must be completed and approved in person. Burn Permits may be obtained at your local fire stations and must be reviewed and signed by the Fire Officer on duty.

                                         REQUIRED CRITERIA:
  • A burn site must be at least 500 feet from any occupied building, excluding your own.
  • Only clean fuels may be burned.  Burn site shall not contain garbage, leaves, rubber, plastics, shingles, treated lumber, any petroleum based products or fuels, or any other materials considered hazardous.

  • Burns shall not be conducted under electrical lines or any type of overhead service.

  • Burns shall be contained to a manageable size.

  • Fire shall be attended at all times.  If the attendant must leave the scene, the fire must be extinguished regardless of its size or stage of burning.

  • Fires must be extinguished if any complaints are received from residents or business within the area or vicinity of the burn.

Failure to comply with the above criteria will require a reinspection.

 

Inspection Services

The Fire Marshall’s Office inspects new construction and major fire protection system revisions to insure compliance with the city fire code. To schedule an inspection, call 256-341-4865.

 

Plan Review

The purpose of these plan review and inspection services is to ensure that buildings under construction and those being remodeled in the City of Decatur are designed in accordance with the Decatur City Fire Code and will protect occupants in an emergency.

The plan reviews and construction inspections performed by the Fire Department verify that key safety systems such as fire alarms and fire sprinklers are designed correctly and work properly at the time the building is occupied.

 

Code Compliance

We answer fire code related inquiries and work to resolve outstanding fire code violations.

   

Fire Investigations

Decatur Fire Department Investigators determine cause and origin for fires that meet specified criteria. We will work closely with the Decatur Police Department in preparing cases for referral to Prosecutors when appropriate. Fire reports can be obtained by calling 256-341-4862.
